A Day at Bronzeville: Recapping Our Health Screening Event
This year's Bronzeville Smooth Jazz Festival was more than music, t was a chance to bring health care straight into the middle of a celebration, and we're still buzzing from how it went.
Setting Up in the Middle of the Joy
There's something powerful about setting up a health booth in the middle of a festival. People weren't coming to us because they were sick or worried. They were coming to us between sets, mid-conversation with friends, on their way to grab food. That's exactly the point , meeting people where they already are, on a good day, before a small issue becomes a big one.
Our team spent August 1st doing just that: checking blood pressure, answering questions, and having real conversations with the people of Bronzeville.
What the Day Actually Looked Like
We didn't know exactly how many people would stop by, but the booth stayed busy from start to finish. A few things stood out:
People were genuinely curious about their numbers, some for the first time in years.
A number of attendees hadn't seen a doctor recently, and left with a referral to Miles Square Health Center in hand.
Conversations about organ donation sparked real interest, especially once people learned about the founder's own transplant journey and why this cause is personal to CarrCARE.
None of this happens without the right people in the right place. That's what a festival booth like ours is really for.
High blood pressure doesn't announce itself. Most people walking around with it feel completely fine, which is exactly why events like this matter. A five-minute check at a jazz festival can catch something that would otherwise go unnoticed for years.
That's the gap CarrCARE exists to close: not replacing a doctor's visit, but making it easier for someone to realize they need one.
