ALANA CARR
Medicine is not Enough
Findings Meaning and Resilience in Chronic IIlness
About
Medicine Is Not Enough is a deeply personal and powerful exploration of life with chronic illness. Drawing from her own experiences navigating severe childhood illness, prolonged hospitalizations, organ transplantation, and systemic gaps in healthcare, Alana Carr reflects on what it truly takes to survive and live beyond medical treatment alone.
Through vivid storytelling, the book examines the emotional, social, and psychological dimensions of illness: grief, resilience, community, identity, and the quiet strength built in moments of uncertainty. It underscores the importance of human connection, advocacy, play, and dignity in healing, especially within healthcare systems that often focus on treatment at the expense of the person.
This book is not just about medicine or survival; it is about meaning. It invites readers, patients, caregivers, clinicians, and advocates alike to reconsider what healing really looks like, and why compassion, access, and support are as essential as any prescription.
